This mid-size fossil plant in SCE&G's system generates approximately 300 megawatts of electricity by burning pulverized coal in two units. At full load, Canadys Station can produce enough power in one hour to supply the average electric needs of 300 residential customers for one month.
Environmental Initiatives
- More than $17 million was spent to install a baghouse on Unit 3 in 1999. The baghouse removes 99 percent of the fly ash from the combustion process.
- In 2007, a dry ash silo was installed on unit 3. This system was installed to collect fly ash and for recycling ash to be used in the production of cement.
- The boilers have low-NOx burners, installed in the late 1990s, that reduce the amount of nitrous oxide gases even further.
- Canadys utilizes a closed cycle cooling water system which means it has little impact on the nearby Edisto River and the surrounding wildlife.
- The plant retired Unit 1 at the the end of 2012 to comply with environmental regulations.
