Fact: Demand for natural gas is growing.
Natural gas is one of the nation's fastest-growing energy sources, with demand forecast to increase by more than 20 percent between now and 2030.
Fact: Natural gas appliances are efficient.
Gas appliances are more efficient than ever. With new gas appliances, homes today use 22 percent less gas than in 1980.
Fact: Natural gas increases a home’s resale value.
Adding natural gas amenities to a home may pay dividends down the road when it’s time to sell. Natural gas homes have about a four percent higher resale value over electric-only homes according to the National Association of Home Builders.
Fiction: The U.S. is running out of natural gas.
A recent U.S. Department of Energy study reports that recoverable reserves and resources of natural gas in the lower 48 states total 1.295 trillion cubic feet, more than a 70-year supply at current production levels. Plus, experiments with biomass are showing how to produce natural gas from plants and waste products.
Fiction: The color of the flame on a natural gas appliance should be yellow or orange.
The flame should always burn blue. If it doesn’t, it may be a sign that the appliance needs adjusting or cleaning. Appliances should always be checked and adjusted by a qualified service technician. Natural gas fireplace logs are an exception. Most are designed to be operated with a yellow or orange flame in order to achieve a more realistic appearance.
