Easy Tip for Saving Energy
September, 2008 - Issue #4

More and more, homebuyers want to know how to save money and conserve energy. You can provide them with tips that will help them do both.

Let your buyers know that a programmable thermostat can help them save money and energy. One of the easiest things homeowners can do is to set their thermostat to the appropriate temperature during the summer and winter months.

For optimal energy efficiency, homeowners should set their thermostats to 78o F or higher in the summer and 68o F or lower in the winter. For each degree below 78 for cooling, and above 68 for heating, a homeowner’s costs increase by about 5 to 10 percent.

Installing a programmable thermostat makes it even easier to save money and energy. Homeowners may save up to $180 a year by properly setting their programmable thermostats and maintaining those settings, according to ENERGY STAR®.

By programming the thermostat to automatically adjust to proper temperatures at various times of the day, homeowners may see significant savings in their monthly energy bills. In particular, they can set the thermostat to automatically decrease heating and cooling in the home when there is less need. In the summer months, for example, homeowners can program the thermostat to adjust up a few degrees when they are out of the house and to adjust back down to a comfortable setting when they return.

Help your buyers take control of their energy costs by informing them about the money and energy they can save using a programmable thermostat.
