|Dan WhitehouseThis summer has been one of the hottest on record. Imagine living in the 95-degree heat with no fan or air conditioning. In July 2009, Dan Whitehouse, a lead customer service representative and 17-year company veteran, made the lives of some Columbia families a little better.
Dan purchased 25 fans and donated them to our customer assistance area for distribution to Columbia-area residents without air conditioning. The fans were distributed by Homer Mitchell, manager of customer assistance. Some of the fans were given to Project HOPE, a program for senior citizens in Richland County.
"I talk to customers a lot and many of them live without modern conveniences that we take for granted," said Whitehouse. "I just wanted to do something to help."
A fan donation came naturally to Dan – he's been surrounded by them all his life. His parents had vintage fans when he was growing up. As a kid, he worked on fans with his dad and now he collects vintage electric fans.
"I started collecting them in 1997," said Whitehouse. "I have more than 100 of them. I even had a vintage fan restored for former SCE&G President Neville Lorick for his home in Montana."
Dan stated the quality and beauty of vintage fans is no comparison to the fans made today. As a member of the Antique Fan Collectors Association, Dan networks with other fan collectors and enters some of his restored fans in fan shows. How cool is that?
