SCE&G - Carbon Dioxide
Carbon Dioxide

News coverage of global climate change has grown exponentially in recent months, but it has been on SCANA’s radar for some time. SCE&G is currently working in partnership with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and others to identify and develop cost-effective technologies to help address greenhouse gas concerns.

  • The company helps fund the activities of the UtiliTree Carbon Company, a voluntary initiative of the electric utility industry to fund forest development projects around the world. These forests help sequester carbon safely and naturally.
  • SCE&G participates in the Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (SECARB), the southeastern component of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Carbon Sequestration Regional Partnership Program.
  • SCE&G entered into a Climate Challenge agreement with the United States Department of Energy in 1997 to reduce greenhouse gases by 2,000,000 tons from projected emissions by 2000. The company exceeded this goal by over 60,000 tons in the first year of the program. From 2000 through 2005, SCE&G reported reductions of more than 16 million tons. The reductions are the result of several efforts, including carbon sequestration projects, ash recycling, energy efficiency improvements and demand-side management programs.
