As the demand for electricity continues to rise in our country, the need for more generation is inevitable. Projections from SCE&G indicate a need for a large-scale power plant to serve its system by the 2015-2016 timeframe.
To meet that demand, SCE&G is investigating nuclear power as its generation choice for the coming years. Should SCE&G decide to build another nuclear plant, the unit will be built at the site of its current V.C. Summer Nuclear Station – 30 miles northwest of Columbia.
Nuclear power has distinguished itself as a viable energy source for many reasons. It is safe, efficient, reliable, affordable and has strong public support. However, one of the most compelling reasons to consider nuclear power is that it does not emit greenhouse gases. As the country looks for ways to reduce emissions from automobiles and various power sources, nuclear power continues to generate electricity virtually emissions-free.
