Water is critical to everything we do and is one of the area's greatest treasures. It is used by our company to generate power, by our communities for drinking and by our families for recreation.
We recognize our responsibility to manage our electric generating operations in a way that is environmentally sound. We monitor water quality in all water bodies impacted by our facilities and engage in ongoing studies that are focused on the health of aquatic life.
Water has played a special role in our company since the early days of electric generation. Just as our historic Columbia Canal in South Carolina relied on flowing water to generate electricity, subsequent hydroelectric generating facilities rely on flowing waters. Lake Murray in South Carolina, known today as a favorite place to live and play, was built to provide electricity through hydropower. Employees at our SCE&G coal-fired and nuclear-generating plants in South Carolina also work diligently to minimize the impact of operations on our water resources.
