March 28, 2005 - Columbia, SC, South Carolina Electric & Gas Co.'s public parks on the Lexington and Irmo sides of the dam at Lake Murray will open April 1 for the 2005 season.

The boat-launching park on the Irmo side will remain open until Labor Day. The beach/recreation area on the Lexington side will close July 31 because of construction to widen Highway 6 and the resulting modifications to the park.

"Now that water levels have returned to normal, this will be the first time in two years we've been able to open the swimming area, and we want the public to enjoy themselves," said Tommy Boozer, who manages the parks for SCE&G.

"At the same time, we want to remind people that a major highway construction project is underway and that they should use caution when entering and leaving the park site for their safety," he said.

Operating hours are from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday through Friday through mid-May, when the park will begin staying open until 8 p.m. Weekend and holiday hours are from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Entry fees are charged during normal operating hours to partially offset the cost of maintenance, security and improvements at the parks.

Fees for motorcycles are $2. Car and truck fees are $3. The fee for buses is $5, and season passes can be purchased for $45 per vehicle.

The public boat launch has two ramps and is open 24 hours a day. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Restrooms and picnic facilities are available.
