Oct. 24, 2005, Aiken, SC - South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. and its employees began a "Housewarming Blitz" today, during which they will weatherize two homes in Aiken, as well as homes in Camden, Charleston, Columbia and Lake City to help make heating more efficient this winter. The initial blitz will conclude Nov. 1.
With funding from SCE&G, and in collaboration with the Governor's Office (Office of Economic Opportunity), Community Action Agencies will go on to weatherize more than 142 homes in those areas. The "Housewarming Blitz" coincides with the observance of National Weatherization Day, Oct. 30.
During the initial blitz, nearly 100 employees from SCE&G, in cooperation with the Community Action Agencies, are caulking, weatherstripping, insulating and replacing windows and doors on homes throughout its service territory – including the home of Geneva Wheeler, a Burnettown resident, as well as homes in Camden, Charleston, Columbia and Lake City. Wheeler's home was selected based on criteria established by the Aiken/Barnwell/Lexington Community Action Agency.
Today, Clayton Quattlebaum, SCE&G's western district manager, presented Nick Adams, a representative of the Aiken/Barnwell/Lexington Community Action Agency, with a check for $50,000. In total, SCE&G will contribute $150,000 for three Community Action Agencies to weatherize more than 142 homes this winter.
Quattlebaum also presented a blanket to Wheeler as a symbol of the "housewarming" efforts.
"This project gives us a wonderful opportunity to coordinate our effort to help customers in need," said Quattlebaum at the kick-off ceremony outside Wheeler's home. "The improvements to these homes will benefit the homeowners by helping them warm their homes more efficiently and reducing their monthly heating bills."
Also at the ceremony, Ashley Lancaster, director of the Office of Economic Opportunity, read a proclamation from Governor Mark Sanford declaring today Weatherization Day in South Carolina.
