March 30, 2006, Columbia, SC - SCE&G's public parks on the Lexington and Irmo sides of the dam at Lake Murray will open at different times this year due to upgrades to facilities at the beach/recreation area. The boat-launching park on the Irmo side of the dam will open April 3 for the 2006 season. The beach/recreation area on the Lexington side is expected to open mid-May after improvements to park facilities are completed. No exact day has been set. Both parks are scheduled to remain open until Labor Day.
"We apologize for the delay in getting the beach and recreation area open," said Tommy Boozer, who manages the parks for SCE&G. "Our goal is to provide the best facilities possible to the public, and we are working as quickly as we can to finish our upgrades before the summer season. We also want to remind people that construction on Highway 6 continues, and they should use caution when entering and leaving both park sites."
Improvements to the beach/recreation area include a new entrance road, guard house, restroom, paved parking lots and an overview area on the top level of the park.
Once the beach/recreation area is open, the operating hours will be from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Weekend and holiday hours will be from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.
Parking fees are charged during normal operating hours to partially offset the cost of maintenance, security and improvements at the parks. Fees for motorcycles are $2. Car and truck fees are $3. The fee for buses is $5. Season passes can be purchased for $45 per vehicle.
The public boat launch has two ramps and is open 24 hours a day. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Restrooms and picnic facilities are available.
