North, SC, Sept. 13, 2006 – Some students at Dover Elementary School are getting a new set of teachers, but not before their parents meet them first.
Thursday evening, from 5 until 6 p.m., parents, students and teachers will meet to officially kick off a year’s worth of after-school instruction through Dover’s SCE&G Homework Center.
“They come in and we discuss the rules and let them know how they can help in the process,” says Lynn Rivers, Dover teacher and SCE&G Homework Center instructor. “It’s just a good, fun way for us to connect with the community.”
This year Rivers is one of two teachers who will help 30 third through fifth graders improve their reading and math scores in an environment that uses smaller classes to focus on students’ individual needs.
“You have a chance to spend more time with the students,” Rivers said. “Some are the same children I teach during the day, but it helps build a more personal connection because you’re working with them one-on-one.”
Dover Elementary is located at 1411 Bedford Ave. in North.
