COLUMBIA, S.C. (Mar. 6, 2008) – South Carolina Electric and Gas Co. (SCE&G) wants to warn customers about scam artists posing as company tree trimmers.
Last Friday, at least two Columbia-area SCE&G customers were robbed by two men claiming to be utility employees. In both cases, one distracted the customer by showing them the area they “planned to trim,” while the other went inside and took items from the home. According to the customers, the men had no identification and nothing to show they worked for SCE&G or a contract tree trimming company.
SCE&G wants its customers to know that any company or company contracted tree trimming crew will travel in a clearly marked vehicle, either an SCE&G truck or that of one of its three Midlands contractors: Asplundh Tree, Carolina Tree or Davey Tree.
“If you do not see a marked truck, ask the crew to wait outside while you call customer service to confirm the visit,” said Molly Morris, general manager, SCE&G customer service. “We also want you to know there is no reason for any SCE&G tree trimming crew to enter your home, ever. Anyone trying to do so is not an employee of the company.”
While SCE&G often sends written notification prior to planned trimming, there are times when it is necessary to send a crew immediately. In either circumstance, you can call 1-800-251-7234 to verify the visit or, should a situation arise in which you feel threatened, call 911.
