SCE&G Taking Old Customer Service Numbers Out of Service

COLUMBIA, S.C. (June 10, 2008) – Beginning today, South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G) will begin referring all customers who dial old, local numbers to the correct toll free customer service and emergency reporting numbers.

The transition to toll free numbers began in 2005 and though the local numbers are no longer published, some customers may still use them.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for our customers to know which number to call,” explained Molly Morris, general manager of SCE&G customer service operations. “That’s why we’re getting rid of these older numbers and using toll free numbers only.”

The correct numbers and their uses are as follows:

  • 1-888-333-4465 – Power outages, downed and/or sparking lines, natural gas leaks
  • 1-800-251-SCEG (7234) – General customer service inquiries

The old numbers will be disconnected September 1; until then, customers who dial them will hear a recording directing them to the toll free numbers. SCE&G urges all customers to please make a note of the correct numbers.

South Carolina Electric & Gas Company is a regulated public utility engaged in the generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity to approximately 643,000 customers in 24 counties in the central, southern and southwestern portions of South Carolina.
