SCE&G Reports Low Gas Odorant Condition
Public Affairs

COLUMBIA, S.C. (July 30, 2009) – South Carolina Electric & Gas Company was notified by its natural gas supplier, CGT Pipeline, that they experienced an issue with odorant injection into SCE&G's natural gas system July 29.

CGT has since corrected that situation and SCE&G customers should not notice any impact on their natural gas service.

Natural gas is odorless and colorless. An unpleasant sulfur-based odorant is added to help detect rare instances of leaks.

SCE&G took additional precautionary steps to address this situation, including using a portable odorant injector and doing extensive testing to detect low levels of odorant. Since it was notified, more than 50 locations have been tested. In afternoon testing, all locations indicated the presence of odorant. SCE&G will continue to monitor the situation.
