SCE&G Warns Customers About Phone Scam
Public Affairs

Aiken, S.C. (Feb. 15, 2012) – South Carolina Electric & Gas Company is alerting customers in the Aiken area to be aware of telephone scam artists posing as SCE&G employees. A number of customers have reported instances today of individuals portraying themselves as SCE&G employees over the phone. In all cases, the individuals are requesting immediate payment of the customer’s SCE&G bill and threatening service disconnection if payment is not made.

Bill payments are only accepted at SCE&G business offices, by mail, online or through SCE&G's phone payment provider, BillMatrix, by calling 1-800-450-9160.

If someone calls and introduces themselves as an SCE&G employee, the company recommends calling Customer Service at 1-800-251-7234 for verification or dialing 911 if they feel threatened.

“We encourage our customers to call us if they have any concerns about their accounts,” said Danny Kassis, vice president of customer service.

“Also, if you feel you’ve been victimized by one of these scam artists, please contact local law enforcement,” Kassis added. “They will have a better opportunity to apprehend these individuals if they receive timely notification.”
