The introduction of Music Director Morihiko Nakahara in 2008/2009 ushered in a New Era of Artistic Excellence that is allowing the orchestra to move forward and become the Midlands pre-eminent performing arts group.

The SCP’s education outreach programs reached more than 4,000 young people and their families during the 2010-2011 season. Kids to Concerts, a program that provides complimentary tickets to at-risk youth and their families, brings over 350 individuals to the Koger Center for the Arts where they experience the joy of live symphonic music. In addition, Maestro Nakahara hosted the Young People’s Concerts where more than 3,500 children learn about orchestra instruments through demonstrations by the SCP musicians.

The SCP’s Youth Orchestras provides quality education to many talented young musicians from the Greater Columbia area and surrounding counties. Through the audition process, students are placed in one of three orchestras and perform concerts three times a year. Over 200 students participate in the SCP’s Youth Orchestra Program.

The SCP also has a variety of in-school education programs such as Adopt a Musician, in which an SCP musician partners with a classroom to teach students about music and life as a musician. The SCP also performs student programs such as Carnival of the Animals and Peter and the Wolf for school groups.
