Call Before You Dig
811 call before you digBefore you or someone you hire start digging — for a landscape project, a building project or for any other reason — call 811, the “Call Before You Dig” number that will connect you to SC811, previously known as the Palmetto Utility Protection Service (PUPS).

South Carolina law requires that you call to have your lines marked at least three working days (72 hours) prior to beginning any type of excavation project. Upon notification, SCE&G will send a representative to your property to mark the location of our utility lines so that you or your contractor can easily avoid them while working on your project. Line marking is provided free of charge and is good for 15 working days after it has been processed by SC811. Read the complete text of this law
Failure to notify SC811 prior to beginning an excavation project can result in fines of up to $1,000. Please keep in mind that you are responsible for violations resulting from the work of contractors you hire.

Pipeline Safety and You (364KB)

Projects that warrant SC811 notification include the installation of:
  • Septic tanks and sewer lines
  • Swimming pools
  • Wells
  • Sprinkler systems and water lines
  • Basketball goal posts or mailbox posts
  • Fences and deck posts
  • Trees and shrubs
All damages, regardless of size, must be reported to the utility owner so that the damages can be inspected for safety in order to prevent future failure of the system.

If damage caused by excavation projects endangers life, health or property, the person responsible should immediately notify the utility owner and the police or fire department, as well as take any other appropriate actions to minimize the hazards until the utility owner’s personnel, police or fire departments arrive.

If you need to reach SCE&G for any reason, call us toll-free at 1-800-251-7234.
