Factors Affecting Natural Gas Rates
Cost of Gas
While SCE&G doesn’t produce natural gas, we are your natural gas distribution company. Energy companies like ConocoPhillips and Shell actually produce the natural gas you use in your home, which primarily comes from drilling done in the Gulf of Mexico.

Any significant change in the supply and demand of natural gas, such as storms that disrupt production or cold weather that increases customer demand, can raise wholesale costs for this fuel.

It's important to understand that SCE&G purchases natural gas on the wholesale market and brings that gas to South Carolina. The cost of this purchased gas can fluctuate and has the greatest impact on what you pay for service. It can account for as much as 74% of your rate.

SCE&G does not profit from the purchased gas costs.
