SCE&G Announces Support for Teachers’ Supply Closet

Cayce, S.C. (Sept. 15, 2016) – A recent donation by SCE&G is helping teachers in the Charleston-area get the supplies they need to sharpen young minds. The company presented Teachers’ Supply Closet with $25,000 during a ceremony on Sept. 13.

The nonprofit provides free school supplies to teachers in more than 40 Title I schools in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties, schools in which nearly 80 percent of students qualify for the free or reduced price meal program. Teachers’ Supply Closet collects both supplies and monetary donations.

“We’re proud to support a worthwhile cause that positively impacts thousands of local students and their teachers each year,” said Keller Kissam, president of retail operations for SCE&G. “When we invest in our teachers and our students, we’re also making an investment in the future of South Carolina.”

Kissam continued, “One of SCE&G’s core values is to do what’s right. Another is serving our communities. This donation is about doing both: Doing what’s right by our teachers and students and helping ensure that they are equipped with the tools needed to succeed at school and in life.”

Teachers’ Supply Closet distributed more than $779,000 worth of supplies to teachers in 2015. On Tuesday, officials with SCE&G helped pack teachers’ vehicles with markers, crayons, paper and other items for the classroom. Lynette Duggins Thomas, executive director of the nonprofit, said the donation by SCE&G will go a long way.

“These teachers have seen students come to school on the first day empty handed, and in many cases they’ve gone in their pockets to get supplies for their students,” Duggins said. “So, this wonderful, heartfelt gift by SCE&G helps a great deal. These teachers have a passion for their students, and the supplies help them take the learning experience for their students to the max.”

SCE&G has long placed a focus on improving quality of life in the communities it serves, with philanthropic initiatives serving low-income, elderly and other populations in need. The company annually supports arts and culture, community and civic, education, environmental and health-related causes throughout its service territory.
