SCE&G Monitors Hurricane Michael and Urges Customers to Prepare

CAYCE, S.C. (Oct. 9, 2018) – As Hurricane Michael approaches South Carolina, SCE&G encourages customers to be prepared and stay safe.

“We continue to monitor and prepare for the impacts of Hurricane Michael across our service territory,” said SCE&G Vice President of Operations Bill Turner. “Heavy rain and severe winds will cause outages, but regardless of what this storm brings, we’re ready and our system is ready. We want to make sure that all of our customers are prepared as well.”

Customers can monitor power outages in their area at sceg.com/outages-emergencies/power-outages/outage-map.

SCE&G encourages customers to stay safe during Hurricane Michael and remember the following tips:

  • Stay away from downed power lines – Storms can cause tree limbs and entire trees to break and fall, sometimes taking power lines and even meter boxes down with them. Always assume any downed power line you see is live and stay away. To report a downed line, call 888-333-4465.
  • Know what to do in the event of a tornado – Get indoors to a pre-designated shelter such as a basement, storm cellar or the lowest level of a building. If there is no basement, go to the center of an interior room on the lowest level, away from corners, windows, doors and outside walls. If you’re in a vehicle, trailer or mobile home, get out immediately and go to the lowest floor of a sturdy, nearby building or storm shelter.
  • Report outages:

    • Online using a mobile device, which is the quickest and most efficient way to notify SCE&G of a power outage. SCE&G’s website, sceg.com, is a mobile-friendly site. Customers can report outages on the site or register their mobile device to have the option to report or check the status of an outage through text messaging. Once a phone is registered, customers can simply text the word “Out” to 467234 (GOSCEG) anytime they lose power. They also can check the status of an outage by texting “Status” to the same number.
    • By phone: 888-333-4465.
