CAYCE, S.C. (Dec. 13, 2018) – SCE&G employees and retirees spent the day bringing holiday joy to more than 400 Midlands families by delivering food baskets and gifts to their front doors. The deliveries were part of the company’s 35th annual Christmas project through the Good Neighbor Fund, a nonprofit funded and run by SCE&G employees and retirees.
“For 35 years, employees and retirees have donated their own money to contribute to collecting the items needed to fill baskets with food and provide toys for children,” said Cristina Freeman, manager of SCE&G’s customer assistance programs who volunteers on the Good Neighbor Fund board. “Being able to spread happiness and see smiles on the faces of the families that we deliver food baskets to, is what it’s about. Being able to serve our community is the very essence of who we are as a company.”
Hundreds of SCE&G employees formed an assembly line Thursday morning at the company’s operations support center in Cayce to fill baskets with a ham, vegetables, fruit, potatoes, rice, candy and other items, including toys for families with children. Once the baskets were filled, employees packed them up in vehicles and delivered them to families in need within the community. Altogether, the Good Neighbor Fund provided 975 food baskets to families in South Carolina and North Carolina.
“We don’t just do this at Christmastime,” Freeman said. “Through employee referrals, the Good Neighbor Fund helps people with medical bills, food, and other basic needs they may have when facing an emergency. We literally give thousands of dollars throughout the year to help people in need within our community.”
Since 1982, the Good Neighbor Fund has helped more than 12,400 families with donations of more than $4.6 million. More than 20,100 Christmas project baskets have been delivered in South Carolina and North Carolina combined. One hundred percent of all donations go directly to helping families in need.
