What are the benefits of electric vehicles?

Electric vehicles and equipment are quiet, clean, efficient, and offer users the opportunity to save money on fuel and maintenance costs, reduce their environmental impact, and contribute to the energy independence of the U.S. by using domestically produced sources of energy.

What types of electric vehicles are there?

Consumers today can choose between PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles) and BEV (battery electric vehicles). PHEVs are powered by an electric motor and battery, paired with an internal combustion engine. BEVs, also called "all-electric vehicles," are powered by an electric motor and battery alone, and never use gasoline. Buyers should evaluate their own driving needs to determine how the different vehicle technologies can work for them.

Infrastructure is already beginning to appear around the country. However, extensive infrastructure to support the vehicles may be deployed at the pace of vehicle sales. The industry believes the majority of vehicle charging will take place overnight at vehicle owner’s homes. Overnight charging will be less costly and more efficient for everyone.

Ask your auto dealer what the vehicle manufacturer recommends for getting your home plug-in ready.  Charging times vary depending on how far you drive between charges, the speed of your charging equipment, and the capabilities of your EV.

For vehicles and charging units capable of shorter charging times, higher-power electrical connections may be required-similar to the electrical connection for a household air conditioner or dryer - a standard 240 volt outlet.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, most new BEV can go at least 200 miles on a single charge, compared to 300 for a gas vehicle.

When shopping for EV, consider how far you drive each day. In most cases, an overnight charge at home is more than enough to recharge an EV after your typical day’s drive.

Dominion Energy South Carolina would be responsible for providing the generation capacity to support BEV. Part of the utility’s role is to provide reliable electric service and serve the needs of its customers. Typical BEV demand could be during night time hours so this could develop into a mutually beneficial opportunity for consumers, environmentalists, and the power grid owners.

Dominion Energy SC does not offer cash rebates or financing for electric vehicles.
